Ministry Tools for Christian Growth...
Ministry is More than Preaching...
Seventh-day Adventist Church members recognize that an organization focused on the life and actions of Jesus Christ must position itself in such a way as to make an impact on the community. The influence a church has is divided in two ways: First, on the church family consisting of members and friends of the church; and Second, on the people of the community in which the church exists. This church chooses to become an influence in our community, and an illumination of the lovely Jesus by reaching out in a number of ways.
Music is a central theme of the church. There are a number of great musicians who play a wide variety of instruments. From guitar to autoharp, flute to trombone, french horn to the saw, viberharp to piccolo, drums to piano, violin to saxophone; the diversity is readily evident as performances are always given to glorify the Lord. In addition, concerts are scheduled numerous times a year with nationally recognized performers. These concerts enable the church to host the community and to provide quality music and great fellowship.
2003 Vegetarian Cooking School...
One of the premier cooking schools in the county is held each year by the members and staff of the church. This tradition began 12 years ago in Lake Wales, and is being continued in the larger facilities of the Winter Haven Cook-Iverson Activities Center located behind the church. The Better Living through Better Nutrition Seminar, with Chef Julio Barillas, was another in the tradition of GREAT SEMINARS with GREAT INFORMATION. The seminar ran October 22-26 with nightly lectures Wednesday through Friday, two Saturday lectures and concluded with a remarkable three-hour combination program Sunday featuring lectures in cooking, nutrition, exercise and a live cooking exhibition.
(See the web page by clicking on the "Better Living" link above.)
New recipes, new nutrition ideas and information, cooking hints, techniques and just plain "Quick and Easy Cooking" is the main focus of the Vegetarian Cooking seminars. Each registrant receives a new cookbook, all demonstrated recipes, numerous handouts and six nights of fun and great food. On bread night, each class member proudly takes home the loaf of bread they made. Every evening ends with sampling of the 10 to 12 recipes demonstrated that evening. The Vegetarian Cooking School was held this year March 17-27, with seminar classes Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays of both weeks.
Nursing Home Ministry...
A monthly trip to Palm Gardens Nursing Home for an old-fashioned sing-a-long proves to be a popular feature for the residents and member alike. Songs range from the tireless favorites like "The Old Rugged Cross" to newer and up-tempo delights like "Give me that Old-Timed Religion" or "I'm In the Lord"s Army". This fun-time singing is enjoyed by children, youth, adults and the mature in years members. Each program features an inspirational story designed to go along with the musical selections. The first Saturday afternoon each month rings with music.
Adventist Food Bank...
The resources of the church have been coordinated to make a significant impact on those who are in need of assistance. Whether a family needs just a little lift, or a sincere and significant help, the Adventist Food Bank stands ready to assist. Frozen foods, fresh foods, canned soups as well a fruits and vegetables, prepared meal entrees and bread, cookies and beverages are all a part of the program. A variety of food is available year around, but a very special "Festival of Praise" is held every November when members and guests unite their efforts to stamp out hunger for a Thanksgiving celebration.
Give Kids the World Ministry...
Few programs give more of a sense of warmth and good feeling than our church's monthly trip to Kissimmee's Give Kids the World Village. Orlando and it's position as an entertainment capital has made it the number one destination of the Make A Wish foundation's "Wish Families." To facilitate the visit of these families, numerous corporate sponsors joined benevolent hands to provide a location for these families to stay at while in Florida. The village is an oasis of hope, convenience and peace for these families while they experience five joyful days. Our church family members come together on the first Sunday morning of each month to provide serving, pampering and clean-up to make this breakfast meal special. We help provide up to 600 Wish Family members with a hearty breakfast and a cheerful send-off for their day's activities. You just might see breakfast accompanied by someone sharing a special moment with one of the families.
Hiking, Biking, Rollerblading and Walking as a Ministry...
The third Saturday afternoon each month finds church members inviting friends and family to join them for an hour or two on the paths of the Polk City Rails to Trails walk-way. Good exercise, great conversation, wonderful views of wildlife (Four sightings to date of a Florida Panther) and delightful company make this afternoon feature a wonderful opportunity to get to know your neighbors better. Come, enjoy the great outdoors!
Water Sking (now that's a wet) Ministry...
Twice a month (the second and fourth Sunday mornings) both the young and "young at heart" come to Lake Roy for a morning of water sports. Skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding, swimming, boat rides and lots of fellowship under the trees and on the water, have made this an unusual ministry and a greatly anticipated event. Check the Water Sports page on this web site for photos of some of the kids and their activities.

Friends, there is a ministry (perhaps several) for each of us to become actively involved in the “Process” of sharing the good news of Salvation to our families and to our communities. Remember, there is but one reason to be a Christian—Preparing a People to be Ready for Jesus to Come. It begins first in our own hearts and then reaches out to our families, friends and to our circle of influence. It happens when each of daily asks God—“Help me to be just a little more like Jesus today, than I was yesterday!”
The Next Step is Yours...
Pick a ministry and come to enjoy an hour, a morning or a day of Christian fellowship and Christ-like attitudes. We can't promise you will be free from sore muscles, or that you won't shed a few tears, either of joy or compassion. What we can promise you is that you will find a community of committed Christians who will welcome you on your first visit, hug you on your second visit (your adopted into the family after two) and miss you greatly when we're not able to be together. Come, give it a try...you just may enjoy yourself!
